The Port Macquarie Museum will celebrate International Museum Day with free entry and the launch of its new free audio guide. The launch will be held on Friday, May 18 from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

“This year’s International Museum Day theme is ‘Hyperconnected Museums – New approaches, new publics’, so it is fitting that we are launching our new audio museum guide on this day,” Port Macquarie Museum’s president, Clive Smith said.

“Our audio guide has been developed using a free web based app  and can be accessed either through the web or through the app itself.

“The audio guide provides an opportunity for visitors to take a voice assisted tour of the museum onsite using their smart phone or tablet, or at any time on the web. We also provide free wifi and earbuds to make it even easier for our visitors to enjoy their visit.

“Thanks to technology, museums like ours are able to reach and connect with audiences worldwide and to find new publics to share our collections and stories with.

“Over recent years this has included digitising our collections and making them accessible and discoverable online and encouraging our visitors to review and share their experiences on social media. Our new audio guide enables us to connect even more with our community, our visitors and the wider cultural landscape.”

The development of the guide was supported by funds allocated to the Royal Australian Historical Society through the Heritage Branch of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. Script readings were provided courtesy of Cameron Marshall, breakfast presenter, Mid North Coast NSW, ABC Regional.
