What is Backroads?
Backroads is Arts on Tour’s annual small halls touring initiative that connects regional and remote NSW communities to small-scale, high-quality performing arts events.
Who is it for?
The initiative is best suited to adaptable, low-budget touring productions, but there are independent and community-run venues across NSW with a wide range of capacities and capabilities.
How much is available?
Applicants from NSW can apply for one of three $7,000 grants to support a tour to 1-3 independent or community-run venues.
What can I use the funds for?
Funds can be used for things like covering the gap in lower ticket sales in a small town, hiring tech gear for venues with a basic offering, and travelling longer distances to reach new audiences with your work.
What venues are eligible?
Independent or community-run venues, such as an old town hall, community centre, local cinema, or indie theatre. Locations that have a professional performing arts centre are not eligible for funding. The overall tour may include these PACs but Backroads funds cannot go towards the delivery of those performances.
How do I apply?
Applications for Backroads 2025 are open and close on Wednesday 17 September at 5pm (AEST).
An application information session was held via zoom on Wednesday 16 July. A recording is available to watch here.
The program is a little different this year, so be sure to read the FAQs and have a look at the updated guidelines here.
