Local artists have a rare opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s most exciting portrait painters, acclaimed artist Daniel Butterworth, based in country Victoria, who will deliver two special one-day workshops across the Mid North Coast this September.
A finalist in both the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the Archibald Prize, Daniel Butterworth has built a reputation for bold, expressive portraiture that crackles with personality and energy. His distinctive approach, working with recycled cardboard and house paint, challenges the conventions of traditional portraiture and produces results that are vivid, immediate, and deeply human.
Arts Mid North Coast is presenting the workshops in Coffs Harbour on Saturday, 5 September and Port Macquarie on Sunday, 6 September 2026, running from 10 am to 3 pm. Numbers are strictly limited.
Designed for artists of all experience levels, the workshops will guide participants through Butterworth’s signature process of working instinctively with large, expressive marks, accessible materials, and a focus on personality and movement rather than photographic likeness. Attendees can expect live demonstrations, hands-on painting exercises, and individual feedback throughout the day.
Participants are encouraged to bring portrait reference images, primary-colour house paint sample pots, reclaimed cardboard, and basic brushes.
Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or looking to break through the habits of a seasoned practice, these workshops offer a genuine chance to loosen up, build confidence, and see portraiture in a whole new light.
Places are limited, so booking early is strongly recommended.
