Daniel Butterworth- Doug Moran and Archibald Prize finalist

Arts Mid North Coast is thrilled to present two special portrait painting workshops with acclaimed Australian artist Daniel Butterworth this September 2026, in Coffs Harbour at MAKE/SPACE (Level 1, Coffs Central) and Port Macquarie at the Glasshouse.

Known for his bold, expressive portraits created using recycled cardboard and house paint, Daniel’s workshops encourage artists to loosen up, work instinctively and embrace the energy of paint. Using accessible materials and large, expressive marks, participants will explore portraiture through a fresh, dynamic approach that focuses on personality, movement, and confidence in mark-making.

Suitable for beginners through to experienced artists, these one-day workshops include demonstrations, practical painting exercises and individual feedback throughout the day.

Materials to bring:

• 5–10 portrait reference images you would like to paint (ideally on an iPad or phone, though hard copies are fine)
• Bright primary colours plus black and white in-house paint sample pots (artists’ acrylics are also welcome)
• At least 5 large pieces of reclaimed cardboard (these can be cut down if needed)
• Brushes
• A water container/tub
