“Bowerbird” Exhibition by Josie Rose
14 Dec 2024 - 4 Feb 2025
Artist Josie Rose’s first solo exhibition Bower Bird offers a window into the perspective of a Gumbaynggirr woman and the realities of cleaning up our sacred waterways.
After personally collecting rubbish from local waterways, for her first exhibition Josie partnered with environmental not-for-profit Ozfish to undertake three local Coffs Creek clean ups.
Using the debris collected, she alongside an art collective of women, created an installation using a style of weaving referred to as ghost net weaving.
Ghost net weaving originated in Mission Beach in Far North Queensland, as a creative response to managing the large volume of rubbish, litter and waste washing up onto their traditional lands.
As climate change continues to shift historical expectations of mother earth’s natural cycles, ghost net weaving as a practice has spread around the Country.
Continuing this tradition here on the Mid North Coast, Bowerbird invites the audience to reflect on the importance of caring for Country.
Join a special opening event on Saturday December 14 from 3-5pm at Wadjar Regional Indigenous Gallery (Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre).
