Mid North Coast
Just 2 hours north of Sydney is the start of the Mid North Coast where you will discover a venue to suit your needs whether it’s classical or contemporary music, theatre, dance or other performance arts. Extending as far north as Coffs Harbour the Mid North Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia with over 325,000 people to be entertained.
Arts Mid North Coast has created an online directory of over 100 venues and we can also help you with marketing and other advice.
Why not create a mini Mid North Coast tour or ask us about venues to the north and west of our region with our adjoining Regional Arts Development Organisations, Arts North West and Arts Northern Rivers.
The Mid North Coast has seven major theatres with raked auditoriums ranging in size from 158 seats to 594. The largest are modern purpose built complexes in Port Macquarie and Taree which also include studio spaces. Others are repurposed or reinvented having started life as halls, cinemas and smaller community theatres. In all you will find a full range of technical equipment and theatre services to put on the best show in town. In each you will also find established and enthusiastic audiences and communities that will embrace new and innovative performances.
Nearly every village on the Mid North Coast has a hall and many of these are finding a new life as the heart of community arts. Some date back to the 1890’s as part of the School of Arts movement while others were built by their local communities even earlier. Whereas many have raised stages, all in this section of our directory have flat floor seating accommodating 80 to 120 people. While there are challenges as to areas such as green rooms and dressing rooms a focus in their rebirth over the last 10 years has been the acquisition of lighting and technical services. What you will find in abundance however are enthusiastic and committed volunteers and audiences.
At the heart of many of our communities, large and small you will discover the centre of entertainment for so long has been the “local”. This may vary from the larger registered clubs (over 50 on the Mid North Coast) to even more iconic and often heritage pubs. While some of the larger clubs with seating up to 1000 feature performances and kids shows, music rules in both clubs and pubs. The locals will turn out to hear favourites, old and new from local legends and newcomers, to interstate and international touring bands. Indie, rock, folk, country, blues, jazz or relaxed acoustic there is a venue for all.
With our subtropical weather and stunning landscapes it is not surprising that the arts have been taken outdoors on the Mid North Coast. From riverside locations and stunning gardens to vineyards and our parks and reserves you will find the opportunities not only for music festivals and classical concerts but the performing arts and even hidden cinemas.
Cafes & Restaurants
There are an ever increasing number of cafes and restaurants on the Mid North Coast that have the arts on their menu. Many now hold exhibitions and special events. However the local music scene in particular is thriving as the region develops a night time economy for both locals and our 4 million visitors to get out and about to enjoy an increasingly cosmopolitan lifestyle.
