Crystal Tate, a passionate local artist residing on Gumbaynggirr land, has been selected by the Bellingen Shire Council to create vibrant illustrated visitor maps for the region. With her whimsical and colourful style, Tate aims to connect visitors with the breathtaking landscapes and experiences that define the Bellingen valley.
“I am so excited to be illustrating my home,” says Tate. “My map artwork style connects people to the places they visit through simple, unique, joyful whimsy. I strive to communicate the feeling of the place rather than just the dry geographical details.”
Having been born in Dorrigo, raised in Bellingen, and now raising her own family in Urunga, Tate is a true local who cherishes the natural beauty of the Shire. She plans to immerse herself in each location by visiting, taking reference photos, and capturing the unique elements that make each area special. Using Procreate on her Apple iPad, she will distill these visual landmarks and colours into her quirky map designs.
The illustrated maps will inspire visitors to responsibly explore the Shire’s natural areas, participate in local experiences, and take home a unique keepsake of their journey.
You can view Crystal’s art on Instagram @ctillustrations, and find her work in local venues including Split Espresso Cafe in Sawtell, Kaleidoscope in Coffs Harbour, and Hyde Cafe in Bellingen starting November 23, coinciding with the Bellingen Art Trail Weekend.
