Arts Mid North Coast supported artist Vivianne Hazenveld to facilitate her ‘Creative Connections’ art workshops in Wauchope. Participants were invited to express themselves by creating artworks on large paper using charcoal, ink and objects from nature such as gumnuts, leaves, flowers and seed pods. Using these as paintbrushes and mark making tools created a sense of play and of being in the moment.
Guided by music, movement and simple guided exercises, the workshops helped reframe these materials, which may have taken on a negative connotation after the fires, as becoming positive tools for self-expression. The groups were encouraged to let go of any outside troubles and revel in the present moment and the joy of creating. From their larger expressive pieces, smaller postcards were created as gifts for family and friends. Participants were also provided with a communal lunch, creating stronger bonds and connections with each other.
