Artists who are seeking to work with First Nations communities and Indigenous cultural material must inform themselves with Aboriginal Arts and Culture Protocols. These protocols are developed to give guidance and direction to the broader sector in the right way to work and do business with Aboriginal people and communities.
The protocols also provide support and guidance to Aboriginal artists, Aboriginal arts organisations and Aboriginal arts workers to help equip them with the right tools to ensure their interests and cultural rights are acknowledged and acted upon when developing or contributing to arts and cultural projects and programs.
Both Create NSW and the Australia Council funded artists and organisations are required to comply with these protocols as a condition of funding. However, the protocols are also a useful resource for anyone working with First Nations artists or within the First Nations arts and cultural sector.
The following protocols address key legal, ethical and moral considerations for the use of Indigenous cultural material in the arts.
