Tori Ann Donnelly is a Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung artist, as well as an educator and curator, whose work connects creativity, Country and community.
Tori works across multiple formats, and says her insatiable love of learning drives her exploration of new ideas and mediums. Her compelling, textural artworks celebrate a deep connection to culture, storytelling, truth-telling, knowledge-sharing and identity.
Having practiced everything from painting, eco-dying and sculpture, to tattooing and digital design, Tori calls together both traditional and contemporary creative approaches in her work.
Her debut solo exhibition Balawun.ga opens on October 3 at the Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Red Rock. In the following weeks, she will depart to Bundanon, on Yuin Country of the Dharawal and Dhurga language groups on the NSW south coast, and join one of Australia’s most well-recognised artist residency programs.
Tori is part of Arts Mid North Coast’s Shared Practice mentorship program, and she says the motivation and drive of the cohort is inspiring her to reach for more opportunities in her own artistic journey.
Arts Mid North Coast recently visited Tori in her Ngaalgan (Red Rock) studio, and talked with her about the significance of her creative work, her culture and Balawun.ga. Watch the video here.
