A new contemporary gallery space has opened in Nambucca Heads, bringing fresh energy to the Mid North Coast arts scene. SHPSHFTR Gallery, founded by multidisciplinary artist and designer Joshua Connelly, offers a professional exhibition space designed to connect artists directly with audiences and collectors.
Born in Bellingen, Connelly brings more than 20 years’ experience across fine art, fashion and digital media, and the gallery opening marks a commitment to supporting local artists and creating new opportunities for exhibition and engagement.
“SHPSHFTR Gallery came from wanting to build something I would have valued myself,” Connelly said. “A space where artists can exhibit professionally, connect with people directly, and present their work without compromise.”

The gallery focuses on contemporary work across a range of mediums, including painting, sculpture and object-based practice, alongside digital and generative art. It also offers opportunities for self-hosted exhibitions, giving artists greater control over how their work is experienced.
“A more direct connection to the work and the artist is at the heart of it,” he said. “I wanted to create a space that feels open, considered and engaging.”

Alongside the physical gallery, Connelly is developing SHPSHFTR.xyz, a hybrid platform that extends the gallery’s reach by connecting artists, galleries and collectors more broadly.
Local artists are encouraged to get involved by visiting the gallery or applying online.

The gallery also reflects a broader shift in how artists are presenting and sharing their work, with increasing interest in flexible, artist-led exhibition models. By combining a physical space with digital infrastructure, SHPSHFTR Gallery positions itself as both a local hub and a platform for wider connection and visibility.
For audiences, the space offers an accessible entry point into contemporary art, with a focus on creating an inviting environment where people can engage with work at their own pace. As the program evolves, visitors can expect a range of exhibitions that highlight both established and emerging voices from the region and beyond.
SHPSHFTR Gallery adds to the growing network of creative spaces across the region, contributing to a vibrant and evolving arts community on the Mid North Coast.
