In 2014 the Australia Council for the Arts released the report Arts in Daily Life: Australian Participation in the Arts.

To increase the knowledge base about the shape, state and profile of our national arts landscape the Australia Council committed to a rigorous research program commissioned an independent study to provide insight into how Australians participate in the arts. It provided a comparison of shifting attitudes and behavioural trends by benchmarking the findings in 2013 against those from the original 2009 study, More Than Bums on Seats: Australian Participation in the Arts.

The research informs the way Australians understand the importance of the arts, influence the development of arts support, and enhance the evidence base which contributes to arts policy development. The outcomes of the study paint a positive picture. Overall engagement with the arts is up and public attitudes to the arts are highly positive. Some of
the key results tell us that:

  • Australians think the arts enrich our lives
  • Australians value Indigenous arts and there are great opportunities to grow audiences
  • The arts are important in the lives of Australian children
  • More Australians are participating in the arts
