Arts Mid North Coast’s COMPACT Small Works Exhibitions brought a burst of creativity to Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie this August, showcasing the breadth of local artistic talent across the region.

The exhibitions formed part of the MAKE/SPACE initiative, presented in partnership with Gowings Bros Ltd, which transforms empty shopfronts into vibrant creative spaces. COMPACT invited artists of all ages and stages to present works no larger than 30 x 30 cm, offering audiences an opportunity to take home a piece of art while supporting local artists.

Across both locations, more than 110 works were submitted, ranging from emerging voices to established regional artists. Together, the two exhibitions attracted 507 visitors, with lively opening nights drawing 30 people in Coffs Harbour (despite the foul weather!) and 65 in Port Macquarie.

Sales were equally encouraging, with 11 works sold in Coffs Harbour and 14 in Port Macquarie, resulting in nearly $4,044 returned to local artists, with a small commission to support future Arts Mid North Coast projects. Multiple visitors commented on how great it was that the smaller size made it accessible for them to purchase art.

Artists praised the initiative for its accessibility and community spirit. One exhibitor described COMPACT as “A great initiative. Gowings have always been supportive of the arts,” while others highlighted the value of Arts Mid North Coast’s fresh approach under Executive Director Olivia Parker.

“COMPACT shows the incredible creativity that exists across our region, and how powerful it can be when we create opportunities for artists to share their work with the wider community. The response from both artists and audiences has been inspiring,” said Olivia Parker, Executive Director of Arts Mid North Coast.

From a five-year-old first-time artist making their first sale, to exhibitors showing for the very first time alongside established artists, COMPACT celebrated the diversity of our region’s creative community and proved that small works can make a big impact.
